Bukit Lawang Hill Resort It's more than just an accommodation, it's a conservation base

“Let us know, how did you feel in Bukit Lawang Hill Resort? It was built with all our love! Our way of respecting Sumatra’s biodiversity is to do our best to use only fresh products, avoid instant foods, and avoid palm oil. Bukit Lawang Hill Resort is expected to approach tourism in an ecological way with less plastic use, it’s part of our ecotourism efforts in Bukit Lawang.”

Home near the Jungle A good place to get away from people, or, on the contrary, to get to know them closer. Both introversial me and my socially active, nice and extraversial friend liked the place a lot. People living there are very nice. Accommodation neat and comfortable, and every sunrise and when the night comes you can see the whole small world beneath you and hear the music of Jungle. As Claude Levi-Strauss wrote: Music is a language by whose means messages are elaborated, that such messages can be understood by the many but sent out only by few, and that it alone among all the languages unites the contradictory character of being at once intelligible and untranslatable - these facts make the creator of music a being like the gods.

MOST AMAZING PLACE! Don’t hesitate to stay here! I honestly cannot recommend this place enough! We initially only booked a two nights stay along with a two day jungle trek and ended up extending for even longer. We would have stayed on if we could have and were really sad to leave! The accommodation is great. The bed is super comfortable and the bathroom really bright and spacious. There is a large balcony right outside your bedroom with hammocks to relax in (they even have room dividers so you can create a private balcony!). Downstairs is a large common area that’s completely open so you can watch the jungle around you. (It’s magical especially in the evenings or when thunderstorms roll in) Just there we’ve spotted a waran, lots of different birds (including their eagle Timo that they’ve rescued and who still hangs around) and had the chance to meet their cobra as well as the sweetest little gibbon on the day they rescued her together with the local rangers!! They are truly passionate about the animals, it’s amazing to learn from them. Everyone of the team is fantastic but especially Suria has made our stay exceed our expectations. He has made us feel like we’re at home from the start and nothing was ever too much to ask for. Thank you again for the amazing time and we can’t wait to return one day! All in all you will have a wonderful experience here! If you’re still hesitating, don’t, you won’t regret it!!

Great Guys, Beautiful Spot I'm not 100% sure if he owns the place but Bobby seemed to run things and did a decent job of it. The accommodation was amazing, the views from atop the hill where you stay are absolutely top notch. There isn't any AC but this high up the mountain I didn't find it to be hot at all. The room is spacious, as is the bathroom, and outside the room there is a kind of communal balcony area with hammocks, 1 per room I believe so no fighting over who gets to use them. I also booked a jungle trek with the resort, and unfortunately I can't remember the guides name (Andre maybe?) because he and his trainee were amazing. We saw 5 orangutans (no guarantees on this so I was happy with the end result), a baboon, 2 types of monkeys, a peacock, and some cool bugs. Andre (I'm just going to call him that for simplicity's sake) spoke a lot of English, and knew the terrain well. There aren't many real walking trails here, half the time it felt like we were just scrambling across a hillside in the Sumatran jungle which, without Andre, would have been impossible to navigate. The trek was punishing at times, but very, very rewarding. I was so happy to see the orangutans and very happy with the experience. The guys at the resort genuinely care about the wildlife in the area, and supporting ecotours like this help stem the tide of palm tree plantations the government I'm sure would just let happen without a second thought if they couldn't make some money off of the land this way. I would recommend this place for accommodation, and I would recommend them for their ecotours.

Best views in Bukit Lawang We had a great stay with Bobi and his crew at the Hill Resort. The location is high above everything else in town, and offers superb views of the area. You can even see as far as Medan on a clear day. The rooms and bathrooms are very basic, but functional. Everything else is top-quality. Good food, attentive service, personable staff.

So good I was part of a group of 5 who travelled here from Medan. the resort itself is a little haven away from the busy city and its surroundings are just stunning. You can while away the day just relaxing here it is truly a calming place. The room was large and comfortable with a big bathroom, and also hammocks outside. The food is some of the best I had in Sumatra everything was cooked fresh and so delicious. Finally the owner Bobbi and his team are so great to be around. Bobbi is very highly educated on animals and also eco tourism. He works closely with the community to help rescue snakes as well as other animals. He hires some great guides who took us into the jungle, Ucho and Jacob. These guys are so helpful and friendly and really are an asset to the place. If you want to see orangutans but do not want to feed them, and to learn about the effects of the palm oil industry on Indonesia then this is the place to go with. Also the food they provide in the evening in the jungle is delicious and the rafting back is really fun.

The best and only place to stay in Bukit Lawang 5 of us stayed here; we didn’t want to leave. The location is fantastic with incredible views of the landscape and surrounding jungle. Didi makes some of the best Indonesian food I have eaten and is so sweet and friendly. Bobi is incredibly knowledgable about eco-tourism which is so important in an area such as this. If you can, do take a jungle trek with Ucho and Jacob; both lovely local people with a real insight and knowledge of the jungle. You will see orangutans but in as ethical a way as possible, without feeding them, following them or feeling like you are exploiting them and their habitat. This is so important; the animals really are at risk and are put in danger by negligent tour guides. Ucho and Jacob are really helpful and supportive during the trekking. I honestly can’t fault these guys and wish them all the best. We easily could have stayed longer and so glad we chose this place for our time in Bukit Lawang

Great Place in Bukit Lawang We had a perfect week in Green Hill. The owner and the team are superfriendly, helpful and just great, the food is delicious, the place itself is beautiful, peaceful and clean and we loved the treks with our fantastic guide Bob. And last but not least, Green Hill takes care of the environment what we liked. All in all a perfect stay, nothing to complain about. A big thanks again from Lorenz and Marina :)! Best Place in Bukit Lawang My wife and I spend 2 weeks in Feb/March 2018 in this fabulous resort. For us it´s by far the best place in Bukit Lawang due to the location. It´s up the hill with a unique view over the landscape and the jungle and it really feels like living in the jungle. Due to its height it has a much better climate with some smooth fresh wind in the evening and thus a better sleep w/o the need of any aircon. We liked the water coming from a spring in the mountain and being cooked for drinking purpose all day. We also liked the food freshly prepared by your cook. Special thanks to Bobi Handoko as being a lovely host organizing fabulous tracks in the jungle. He has so much in depth knowledge about the biology and ecology of the region and all the animals around. There are also some recommendations to make the experience of living in your resort even better, especially if you like to stay longer than just for a trek. I would appreciate to have some hooks, a small board and mirror in the bathroom. A central safe at the reception would be a good feature so that the travelers can put their money, passport etc. in an envelope into it and don´t have to carry it all the time during trekking. In the restaurant you do have this 4 combined natural seat benchs and tables which are very nice to look at but being the most uncomfortable seats I have ever had ... and you can only sit with two people side by side. I would love to have one bigger table with some more comfortable chairs around to raise the communication between all your very interesting guests during eating and after. Last wish would be to have some comfortable deck chairs on the upper terrace besides the already installed hammocks. We can´t wait to come back to your lovely resort, your tasty Jungle Tea and Bukit Lawang next year!

It's a home base for SUMECO (Sumatra Ecoproject)

THE PHILOSOPHY OF SUMECO AND BUKIT LAWANG HILL RESORT

“The balance of nature is a state where our environment is in a good position to run its functions and provide all the necessary necessities to the available living things in a respected way. It’s also the state of biotic and abiotic components when they are properly functioning without being greedy toward one another.” Bobi Handoko (The Founder of SUMECO).

Careful management of natural resources and ecosystem protection has become the emerging dream of SUMECO and Bukit Lawang Hill Resort; it starts with all the little things we could do. Based on the IQAir 2021 World Air Quality report in March 2022, Indonesia is ranked as the most polluted country in the world with the highest concentration of PM2.5 at 34.3 μg/m3. Indonesia is also ranked first in Southeast Asia as the country with the most air pollution. Indonesia is the second country contributing to global marine plastic pollution. Every year, approximately eight million tons of plastic waste from land is reported to enter the oceans, which is the equivalent of 15 tons of waste per minute. Four countries, including China, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Vietnam, are the biggest contributors to global marine plastic pollution. Source: The ASEAN POST.

WHAT DOES BUKIT LAWANG HILL RESORT DO TO BE CONSIDERED AN ECORESORT IN BUKIT LAWANG?

Bukit Lawang Hill Resort and Bukit Lawang Ecotourism are teamed-up to support SUMECO (Sumatra Ecoproject) financially to continue its grassroots work in the wildlife conservation efforts by saving animals in need especially protected species around Gunung Leuser National Park. It has become our commitment as we believe the preservation of the biodiversity of Gunung Leuser National Park is extremely important, and it has to be our responsibility together.

Bukit Lawang Hill Resort and SUMECO

Bukit Lawang Hill Resort was built in 2016, has become a base and played a big role to support and provide profits to SUMECO to extend its conservation mission by using SUMECO to become tourist activity services, such as jungle tours, study trips, accommodation, and volunteerism.

SUMECO believes it’s very important to keep the business running as SUMECO gains financial support from these profits to continue its work saving the animals.

Bukit Lawang Hill Resort

It's a place to spot birds and other animals

Bukit Lawang Hill Resort is sitting on the top of the hill alone, 90 meters above the Bohorok river, and its elevation provides a large view up to Medan and the green view of Gunung Leuser National Park.

It’s a place to spot sunbirds, slow loris, snakes, Thomas leaf monkeys, macaques, eagles, and it is also a place to start the herping trip. Bukit Lawang has been positively impacted by the dense biodiversity of Gunung Leuser National Park, and this is what we have to maintain.
