Most foreign tourists who do the herping share deep interest in conservation with SUMECO, while SUMECO is only funded by its ecotourism profits. So SUMECO will do its best to save them!

Halaban Ecotourism - Wild Sumatran Elephant

Hi everyone now we gonna talk about Halaban Ecotourism, a new ecotourism village in North Sumatra.

This ecotourism village plays important role to provide protection to the Gunung Leuser National Park.

With their wild Sumatran elephants that have been found within their fixed movement area, has become the main attraction for the tourists to see them in this village.

The ecotourism activities will be expected to create more awareness for local communities to protect Leuser and its biodiversity.

Wild sumatran elephants in Halaban are bordered by palm oil plantation belong to several companies. A few group of wild elephants were cornered to this area because deforestation surounding Halaban.

and Mongabay discovered that there are just about 1400 wild Sumatran elephants are left in the wild.

In addition to working on palm oil plantations, the Gunung Leuser National Park authority has promised to help local livelihoods through ecotourism.

So it's important to create jobs in ecotourism to make better future to our nature and the people.

Sustainable Development of Halaban Ecotourism Through Wild Sumatran Elephants.

Halaban’s sustainable ecotourism development method in the initial stages, in 2023, still relies on ecotourism activities to see wild elephants that have fixed movement areas. As it’s known, this implementation was initialized in Tenggulun, Aceh Tamiang, in March 2023, when, during the process of tourism development, we accidentally discovered many illegal logging activities carried out by local communities that had become our future challenge to its development.

The continuous efforts for sustainable development of Halaban ecotourism have never shifted away from ecotourism elements based on conservation and empowerment of local communities, which in the future are expected to be able to increase the protection capacity of Gunung Leuser National Park, carried out by authorities together with the surrounding community.

The application of economic value through conssrvation based ecotourism activities in Halaban is expected to have positive impacts on public awareness of environmental sustainability in the surrounding areas, especially for the biodiversity of Gunung Leuser National Park.

An evacuation of a wild Sunda slow loris (Nycticebus hilleri) that accidentally entered the residence of the Military Subdistrict Command was conducted by the officers of Gunung Leuser National Park and members of the Military Subdistrict Command.
