Ecotourism in Bukit Lawang, North Sumatra

Orangutan, Elephant, Herping, Birdwatching, Ecotourism, and Wildlife Conservation in Sumatra

Hello There!

My name is Bobi Handoko, the founder of SUMECO (Sumatra Ecorproject), I really appreciate your interest in SUMECO as I try to conserve wildlife, particularly the biodiversity of Gunung Leuser National Park. A portion of this company’s profits will go toward this project.

The fact that this organization has a background in wildlife conservation is the most crucial thing to know. In addition, SUMECO provides trekking excursions to view Sumatran tigers, elephants, orangutans, and herping tours.

When contacting us, please ensure that you provide the completed information listed below. This will allow us to adequately plan for your trip:

  1. Your full name.
  2. Your origin.
  3. We offer various types of jungle treks to see wild and semiwild Sumatran orangutans and wild Sumatran elephants. Please choose which one you want and how many days you want.
  4. SUMECO has its own accommodation. Did you book accommodation? If yes, what is the name of the hotel?
  5. We offer pickup service from the airport by private comfort car, which costs 700,000 IDR. Let us know how you get to Bukit Lawang.
  6. How many people will be with you?
  7. We require payment in full before the tour starts.
  8. We only use cash for our all payments; if you want to use Wise, make sure the money arrives before the tour starts.

Accommodation With SUMECO

Conservation Is Always the Central Focus

We would like to inform you that you have the freedom to choose your own lodging separate from ours in Bukit Lawang. However, it is important to note that not all accommodations are pleased when clients stay with them but choose to go trekking with another company. We are pleased to assist in selecting an option that the owner would approve of, allowing guests to engage in trekking activities with our organization.

To stay at SUMECO lodging, we kindly request that you make your booking directly through WhatsApp. This helps us avoid paying commissions to third-party platforms, allowing us to allocate more funds, which are generated from our business profits, towards our animal rescue efforts. Your support in this matter is greatly appreciated.

Bukit Lawang is a diminutive tourist settlement that was founded with the purpose of preserving the park from illicit deforestation activities and alleviating poverty. Since 2010, ecotourism in Bukit Lawang has resulted in significant financial gains for private individuals, some of whom are unconcerned about preserving Gunung Leuser National Park. Sumatra is home to a small population of Sumatran rhinos (less than 40 individuals), Sumatran tigers (less than 450 individuals), Sumatran elephants (less than 1500 individuals), and Sumatran orangutans (less than 14,000 individuals).

Wildlife Conservation

Animal Rescue

SUMECO is highly dedicated to its wildlife rescue initiative, which is exclusively financed by its ecotourism earnings. SUMECO was formed as a means to allocate funds from its commercial entity’s revenues rather than generating income like the majority of NGOs. It is crucial to study SUMECO’s website, particularly the Bukit Lawang Ecotourism page link, due to its significance. After you arrive at our place, you may not see me due to animal rescue-related work keeping us busy outside.

Every animal rescue definitely needs money for its operational costs; that’s one reason why I established ecotourism businesses in Bukit Lawang and Halaban. It’s my psychological demands to keep going with animal rescue without begging big organizations to fund or sitting in front of my laptop to write grant proposals, but I never succeeded due to high competition among NGOs, which are mostly experts in manipulating data. So, thank you so much for choosing SUMECO!

Ecotourism and Conservation

Human Livelihoods and Animal Protection

Every choice made at SUMECO will always have an impact on the conservation and protection of animals. Every employee at SUMECO works to support themselves and their families, but my job at SUMECO is to maintain the organization’s reputation as a legitimate local animal conservation group. Never forget that a portion of my business’s income were allocated to SUMECO.
